Luminosity Masks Unmasked: Photoshop Workflow

Join professional photographer and Breakthrough Photography Team Pro, Joseph Roybal for Luminosity Masks Unmasked: Photoshop Workflow on Saturday, March 7, 2020, 9am – 4pm at the The Lone Tree Hub, 8827 Lone Tree Parkway, Lone Tree, CO.

Joseph Roybal is excited to offer this Photoshop Post-Processing Workflow course. I work in Photoshop on the majority of my images and have for over a decade. Up until Tony Kuyper released his panels, Photoshop was so much more challenging to work within. His panels have taken and stripped down Photoshop just as Lightroom has done, placing all the tools you need with their best settings at your fingertips and within a single click. This full day workshop will take us from start to finish in Photoshop where my goal is to showcase Photoshop’s powerful and added benefits to your workflow building off what you already know and can achieve in Lightroom and how these panels will transform your workflow and unlock a new level of creativity in your images. We will be working with these panels in more of a need-based format where we will only be exploring and utilizing those functions which are most useful and necessary to our editing. I will begin the day with a recap for those who have previously attended a Luminosity Masks workshop with me and for those who have not I will go over the basic principles and tenets to what luminosity masks are and how to utilize them.

While luminosity masks are not new to many photographer’s workflows, they can be intimidating. To help break these down and make them more understandable I will go through the Zone System discussing light and tonality range helping understand their basic fundamentals. I will also explain certain functions and buttons – the overall layout of the system. For those of you who do not already own these TK7 panels, you can purchase and download them from Tony Kuyper’s website and you will want to buy the TK7 Panels for Photoshop CC. If you are uncertain about purchasing these panels and the expense, Tony does offer the TK Basic V6 Panel for free which will allow you to explore luminosity masks at their most basic, however this panel will not add the majority of the functionality we will be employing during the course. To get the most out of the day and to really be able to follow along I strongly urge the buying of the panel set, they are more than worth their cost of investment at $29. Tony is a great supporter to Joseph Roybal’s educational courses and attendees to this workshop will receive a discount code after registration to receive 20% off your entire purchase on Tony Kuyper’s website. A paid registration is required to get the discount code.

During this workshop we will go over the setup process making sure Lightroom and Photoshop “talk” to each other properly, we will work with setting up a proper color space which is paramount to proper photo editing I don’t feel gets enough attention. We will then move into understanding Luminosity Masks and their “zone systems” and how they are so incredibly powerful to a clean and precise edit Lightroom alone cannot achieve. Attendees will be working with images provided by Joseph Roybal so everyone can follow along and practice the techniques demonstrated during this course.

Understanding how many night sky fans we have and the challenges to get blending a grand landscape image with relation to foreground and sky, we will work with one Joseph Roybal’s newest images captured this summer in the Eastern Sierra Mountains that incorporates advanced techniques of focus stacking foreground images captured pre-sunset properly blending these into a night sky captured later in the evening. We will discuss how to make proper masks of a sky and horizon and how to save, recall and blend this selection and properly adjust tonality and colors perfectly in both foreground and sky images to look natural. We will also work with a daytime image showcasing Light Sculpting and how we can add gorgeous drama within an otherwise flat frame along with Color Grading your image creating harmony and how adjusting the Hue and Luminance in this area plays a critical role in your color palette. Simply, when wanting to create realistic and gorgeous night sky images it is a more complex edit so please understand this when signing up, but nobody will get left behind. We will also be working with a standard image that will showcase how Luminosity Masks can transform your creative approach to your editing workflow. Many times our creativity is limited by our own limitations and Joseph’s goal is to help break these barriers down allowing each participant to achieve their full potential within the craft.
