As an autumn storm engulfs the mountains in ominous clouds, a ray of light illuminates the golden leaves of changing aspens. In one simple image, the remarkable transition between fall and winter comes to life. Selective illumination adds emotion to this photograph. By exposing for the light falling on the trees, the surrounding clouds and water take on a darker tonal value that emphasizes the contrast between the warm tone of the leaves and the cool blue shadows. Inclement weather can often be a benefit to a photographer by creating drama not found on blue sky days. Changing cloud formations, rays of light, and rainbows are uniquely possible in the worst weather, turning conditions often dreaded into something beautiful.

Second only to light, composition in a image makes or breaks its effectiveness. Join award winning photographer Cheryl Opperman as she guides you through the steps necessary to successfully use the tools and rules to design, rather than simply record, your photographs.
