Road Trip ~ Looking for a Few Good Pilgrims…

For a number of years I have traveled south to Northern New Mexico during Holy Week, which is  the first week in April this year.  I mainly go down to photograph the Holy Week pilgrimage to El Santuario de Chimayo and in many ways this has become an annual pilgrimage for me, both a photographic and spiritual journey.  This year I have decided to take some photographers along on this trip.

On my way down I plan to take the high road between Taos to Santa Fe on Thursday (April 5th) and visit the many chapels, towns and pueblos along this road.  On Good Friday I plan to spend most of the day around the plaza of Chimayo photographing the pilgrims and the several events that take place this day.  For those unfamiliar with Chimayo, it is the site of the largest Easter pilgrimage in Northern America.

Over 30,000 people will make this pilgrimage during Holy Week and most will walk to the chapel on Good Friday.  While we are in the area we hope to arrange a lecture on the history of the chapel and surrounding area by one of the nuns in the chapel.

Saturday morning we will photograph the many chapels in Santa Fe and then leave the city for Abiquiu where we will spend the night before Easter.  We may stop back in Chimayo on the way if we can arrange a lecture on the chapel that morning.  There are many historical sites and great landscapes in the Abiquiu area, so much so that this stay will mostly be an introduction to the area.  That Saturday we plan on having a private O’Keeffe and Landscape tour on Ghost Ranch.  Easter Sunday, after some morning photography, we will leave Abiquiu and make our way home, perhaps stopping at different locations for photography along the way if time permits.

We hope to travel down to New Mexico in two cars with six to eight photographers.  The cost of the trip is approximately $100 for those who travel down together and this will cover the lecture at the chapel, maybe a a photo presentation in Santa Fe, and the tour  in Abiquiu.  Any funds left over will be returned.  Those traveling will be responsible for their own hotel and food costs and pueblo entrance fees.  We would like to firm up who is going by the end of February. If you are interested send Charles Lehman and email including your contact information.
