Capturing the Dark Side – Part 2 – Mike Berenson

Watch Your Step by Mike Berenson

As the second session in a 3 part series, I invite you to join us for an instructional series of presentations and field work focused on an introduction to night photography.  At  high level, the first session will provide a general background before going out into the field.  Then, we’ll have a second session out in the field where we’ll shoot under the night sky up on Mount Evans.  And then finally, we’ll have a follow-up instructional session where we’ll look at post-processing our images.

In the second session, I plan lead a group meet-up style field trip onto the peak of Mount Evans for a night-photography shooting session.  On this night, we’ll have hopefully have some good weather with light winds to make shooting at 14,000 feet more comfortable.  Considering the elevation and the typical weather (and wind), please do come prepared with warm clothes.  If the weather looks really ugly, I have plans to delay the event for one day will keep everyone going posted (if that were to happen).

Assuming the weather cooperates, we should be able to shoot in all directions.  The eastern view over Denver should be filled with lots of light pollution which has potential for some really neat scenes on it’s own.  The moon will be pretty bright at 52% but it will set at 12:09 a.m. – for those who want the darker skies.  At this point, we should have the best view of the Milky Way above although the brightest part will already be sinking lower and lower on the south to south-east horizon.  So with that, our timing of 10pm to 1am should give us roughly 2 hours with moonlight and 1 without.

If all goes well, we should have some great opportunities for creativity as well.  I’ll try a composite image with the Milky Way above the observatory – one I’ve had in mind for quite awhile.  I may also try a really long exposure after doing some high ISO test shooting to figure out my settings.  I may also try an all-sky panoramic series – just to give an idea of what I’ll be thinking.

  • Here are the highlights for the evening:
  • Be able to watch others capture the night sky.
  • Have some limited time to ask others questions while out in the field.
  • Get a great chance to try for yourself the settings and techniques discussed in the first session.
  • Capture your own images to gain even more insight when talking about post-processing in the third and final session

The number of people who can register for this event is limited but it should be a lot of fun.  So don’t miss it!  For anyone who’d like to carpool, we can talk about details as we get closer but I’d suggest meeting at the Morrison park & ride (,-105.206151&num=1&t=h&z=20) at 8:30 p.m.   I look forward to seeing you on August 24th.
